Week 5: Discussion Leader

In the end of the reading (sorry to go backwards) Mia starts reading the lyrics of her dad's songs and discovers what a wonderful writer he is. Mia can't seem to get the song out of her head and subconsciously sings it to Teddy. Does the song provide Mia with a better insight into her Dad? Does this make her feel more connected to him in a sense?

Mia recalls a family friend's funeral that she went to a year before. Her whole family is irritated that the service was not necessarily in his honor. Do you think Mia would want to plan her family's funeral to make it right for them? Do you have any funny expectations for your funeral (which won't be anytime soon)?

Mia finally sort of admits she wants to go away from the state she is in and be with her family. Do you think that she is leaning more toward leaving since she figures Teddy is gone to? Is it understandable or irrational for her to get so angry at the thought of the decision that lies ahead of her? Why?

  1. 1. I definitely think that the song gives Mia a better insight into her dad. She talks a lot about how she's the "black sheep" in a way, and the song helps her understand her father more. I also think that this connects her to him more, because now they share another, not to mention large, common interest, that they can continue bonding over.
    2. I do think that Mia will want to plan her family's funeral. She will want to pay homage to the wonderful people they were, and she wants to honor the wishes that they made clear. I don't really have any funny expectations for my funeral, except that I know I, like many people, want it to be a celebration of life.
    3. I do think her assumptions about Teddy are swaying her decision. If Teddy is alive, it is almost certain that she will stay with him. But if he isn't, then her decision gets a lot more difficult. It is completely understandable for Mia to get so angry at the thought of deciding her own fate. It must be a life-changing (literally) decision, and probably weighs heavy on her. She is being pulled in many directions, and it is not a bad thing that she lets out all of the stress that she's probably feeling. It is also validated because it is probably mixed with confusion and anguish, and that must be a lot for someone of Mia's age to handle.

  2. 1. I think the song reconnected her with her dad. Now, since he is gone, she can only think of him in that way. But when she reviewed his lyrics, she started thinking about him in present tense again. She found another relationship with him.
2.I think Mia realizes how important it is to relate a person's funeral back to their personality when they were alive. She probably knows exactly how her parents would want their funerals to be because she was so close to them. I have not really thought about my funeral before so I do not have any quirky requests for it.
    3. I think that she is leaning towards leaving her home state. It is not irrational because I see it as that there is so much there. That is where she lost her whole immediate family so why would she want to be constantly reminded of that?
