Week 1: The Connector

The whole story occurs because of the car accident Mia and her family suffered. Right now, it sounds like Mia is the only survivor. Her father is dead, her mother is dead, and Mia could not find her 8 year old brother Teddy anywhere. This made me interested in the likelihood of this ever really happening. So I searched the web for "car accidents with only one survivor" and I found http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2326960/One-year-old-British-baby-survivor-Mecca-car-crash-BODY-BAG-taken-mortuary-rescuers-realised-alive.html. This article is about a one year old boy who was the only survivor out of 5 passengers. But the interesting part is that the first responders originally thought the boy was dead like the rest of the travelers he was with; so, along with the others, he was bagged and brought to a mortuary. The stories relate because they are both about only one family member surviving and that family member being a child. Do you think the article and book relate? What are some similarities and differences? What interested you about the article?

  1. I do think that the article and book relate, for all of the reasons that were previously mentioned. They are both children (although Mia is much older), and they were both sole survivors of the crash at this point (Teddy might still be alive somewhere). I think they differ however, because of the way Foreman writes. Mia, being 17 (?) is much more mature than a 1 year old, and could therefore register what was going on. She could also remember her family. The baby however, probably had an extremely vague memory of his family, simply because he was so young. Another difference is that They didn't put Mia in a body-bag right away, like they did with the baby. The toddler also (surprisingly) suffered fewer injuries. While Mia has to choose between life and death, the baby suffered a dislocated shoulder, a broken arm, and broken ribs. I found this article interesting because a baby is so fragile, especially when it is only a year old, and it is surprising that such a young child could survive even with someone guarding them. It seems like the impact alone would be enough.

  2. I think these defiantly do relate, but they are very different. The article says they were traveling to Mecca in a taxi, not someone related to them. The boy was also just a toddler and, as terrible as it is, he will be able to recover quicker then Mia because the event will fade from his memory. However, they will still both have to continue growing up without their parents. I thought it was really sweet in the article how they said the boy's grandfather had shielded him from the blow and it reminded me of how Mia's mom unintentionally did the same or her family.
