Week 3: Discussion Leader

1. After the social worker leaves Gran and Gramps alone with Mia, a nurse come in and reassures them that Mia is aware of everything that is going on so they should encourage Mia to come back but take as much time as she needs. How do you think the nurse knows all this information? Do you think she went through a situation similar to Mia's? Do you think the nurse's information comforted Mia's grandparents or just made them uncomfortable?

2. Regarding the nurse's information, do you think she is correct? If so, which option you think Mia will choose, live or move on, and why? If she chooses to stay, what do you think will be different (other than the obvious differences like her parents being gone)?

3. Mia's Halloween costume brought out a whole new personality that she did not recognize as her own. Do you agree with Adam that it was still her same personality that she has everyday, why? Do you think the costume will help her break out of her shell more often and not just that one night? Do you think she will actually enjoy Adam's shows from now on?

  1. 1. I think the nurse knows the information because she has probably worked with and spoken to people who have experienced trauma similar to Mia's. I'm not sure one could go so far as to say the nurse went through the same thing, because there isn't really any proof. I'm sure other people have been on life support and, once they came out of a coma, they probably told the nurse that they could hear people. I do think that this information comforted Mia's grandparents, because it probably made them feel like Mia has more of a chance of pulling through. I might have been a little worry-some knowing that Mia decides her fate, because they don't know what Mia will choose (Mia doesn't even know).
    2. I do think that the nurse is correct, and I think Mia will decide to stay with Adam and her little brother Teddy. If she does stay, her ability to play music may be compromised, as sad as that is. I also think that her and Adam will get more serious, because both her and Teddy will end up relying on Adam, in addition to other family members.
    3. I think she had the same personality, but was just reacting to the natural occurrences that she was going through differently. Attention from guys and her deciding to have an open mind about Adam's concert probably influenced her actions. I think the costume will assist in Mia breaking out her shell, and opening up more. These two go together. Mia still had her own personality, she was sort of just wearing a mask. I do think that Mia will enjoy Adam's shows from now on, since she had such a good experience at his Halloween concert when she opened her mind to his idea of a good time and his interests.

  2. 1. I don't think the nurse really knew that for a fact and just said that Mia can hear them to comfort her grandparents. I do think they took some comfort in that, as did Mia.
    2. I do think the nurse is correct. If Mis is to stay, I think she will have a much greater appreciation for her life and take advantage of more opportunities.
    3. I think her personality was the same she just learned to actually show it to everyone for once. I think she knows how to enjoy Adam's concerts now that she really knows how to let go of all her nerves and judgements.
