Week 2: Discussion Leader

1. We learned a lot about Mia and her boyfriend Adam in this weeks readings and how their relationship began. What do you think Mia's parents thought of Adam? Is he a good or bad influence on her and why? Do you thinks the good things outweigh the bad?

2. When Mia is being operated on, her mind wonders away from what's happening to her body and begins thinking about why she's not connected to her body and wonders if there are others like her. Do you think that there are others out there that Mia can communicate with? Or is Mia just a special case? Do you think that there are others like her out there, but they cannot see or hear each other?

3. Mia talks about her history with Juilliard; her application, audition, and her family and friends cheer her on to go there. However, Mia never exactly tells us how she feels about going to Juilliard. How do you think she honestly feels about it? If she ever wakes up do you think she will end up going there? Is there any foreshadowing?

  1. 1. I think Mia's parents really like Adam because he loves music as much as they do. His taste of music is similar to Mia's dad's taste in music too. Mia's dad seemed to really like Adam because he took Adam out to the courts to play basketball and get to know each other better. I do not think Adam has any bad influences on Mia. He seems to really make her step out of her shell. When she is with him, she is more outgoing and less reserved. So I definitely think that the good weighs out the bad.
    2. I believe that there is others like her but they cannot communicate with each other. So many people come this close to death that I do not think something like this could only happen to one person.
    3. I do not think Julliard was a thought in her head until her grandma's family member mentioned it. But when it was mentioned, I think Mia really enjoyed the idea but was just really nervous about it. If Mia does wake up, she will go through with the opportunity because it is such a prestigious school and she can do what she loves there.

  2. 1. I think Mia's parents really like Adam. Mia talks about how Adam and her dad go out to play basketball, and he shares many common interests with not only Mia, but more, in fact, with her parents (who were more rock-n-roll than Mia). We haven't seen many bad things about Adam because, like Marissa said, he helps Mia get out of her shell. Therefore, it is easy to say that the good things outweigh the bad things.
    2. I think that if it something that Mia is going through, it isn't just a single special case. There are probably other people who are on life support (in the story; I'm not sure about real life) who are outside of their bodies, but they just cannot communicate with Mia.
    3. I think Mia is excited for Juilliard. With everyone around her hyped up about it, it has rubbed off on her. She admits to being hopeful, even though she is doubtful of her abilities to get in. I don't see any foreshadowing, but I do think she'll try to go there if she wakes up. The only thing that would hold her back is injury from the crash.
